Northern Morocco's Tangier which has undergone rapid modernisation over the years is an ancient Phoenician town that has been inspiration for various writers, artists and musicians like Bob Dylan and John Powell to name a few.
A multi-cultural city with Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities, it has attracted foreign artists for many years and is now the hub for an annual musical event called The Tangier Jazz Festival which started in the year 2000.
The 'Tanjazz' is an event looked forward to by most musicians and music lovers essentially because of the various forms of jazz that it places on a platter to all musically starved ears. Usually lasting for a period of about four to five days, it is open to the public as both free as well as paying concerts.
The venue for Tanjazz, is well chosen within Tangier and the handpicked venues usually include great spots like the Italian Palace, Glenfiddich Tanjazz Club, Comarit, Veolia and Castel Palace which further add to the whole jazz experience.
The four to five days of the Tanjazz Festival provides music lovers with different flavours of jazz, right from contemporary to traditionally inclined notes and from relaxed to upbeat jazz.
Earlier Tanjazz Festivals included unforgettable performances by great jazz artists like Julien Brunetaud Quartet, Jazz Me Do, Boney Fields and The Bone's Project, Mokhtar Samba and Black Label Swingtet. Knowing well the magic of music, Tanjazz is one festival with events that last the whole night allowing fans to dance to its tunes, thus adding to the festival's environment that is charged with the unstoppable rhythm of jazz music.
As tradition goes, the festival fills not just the venues but the whole city of Tangier with rhythmic jazz in the form of early evening parades and free outdoor concerts. The parades and concerts usually take place at venues like the Veolia Stage. The festival also allows experimentation with music and the fusion of jazz with Moroccan music is common at Tanjazz.
Prestigious groups like the Movenpick Hotel and the Rif Hotel and Spa also participate in this musical affair and host exciting dance lunches, piano lounges as well as live music brunches for visitors.
The Tanjazz music festival that takes place annually at Morocco is an experience that can undoubtedly touch your senses and is sure to leave you wanting more. Indeed, the Tangier Jazz Festival is truly the Mecca of jazz music for its admirers.
